HUST ranked number one in Smart Chess Championship Tournament initiated by chess salon, International Master, in Wuhan. Players from about 15 different universities in Hubei joined the match. Three representatives from HUST defeated other universities and were successfully announced first rank in team player category.

In a separate category, an originally-Iranian student from HUST, Ali Totoncy, was announced third rank as individual player.

“It was a great tournament because there were a lot of good players. I was so close to be a champion; I just lost one match,” said Ali.

Being asked whether he would feel confident to win if there was a tournament again, he said he would challenge for number one. Ali added that he had an international chess ranking and he is a member of fide master.

“I play chess professionally and I used to play for Iran National Team so many times”, Said Ali.

Last but not least, Ali suggested that the university give more support to students playing chess and arrange chess tournaments to open wider chess opportunities for them.
