On the morning of Sep 13th, HUST opening ceremony for new international students of 2016 autumn semester kicked off in the auditorium of the School of Economics, where new international students from 131 countries were presented and embraced their new chapter of life in HUST. Chen Lin, the Director of Division of International Student Affairs in China Scholarship Council and Chen Jianguo, Vice President of HUST attended the opening ceremony.Zhao Xiaofeng, Vice Dean of the School of International Education, presided over the opening ceremony. And over 10 senior students in their national traditional clothes saluted at the gate of the auditorium early, welcoming new students of different countries and different colors of skinAll the new students dressed up formly, which added the air of divineness to the ceremony and various languages, skin colors, cloth styles made the auditorium just like the conference hall of United Nations. However they shared one identity in common at that moment—New International Students of HUST.
Chen Jianguo, Vice President of HUST, delivered an ebullient speech, which not only extended warmest welcome to all the new international students, but also introduced the educational resources and goals of HUST. He expressed: “I wish you and Chinese students will learn from each other and make friends with each other. Your friendship will bridge you together as the ambassadors between China and foreign countries, so as to facilitating the friendship between the nations.” His last wishes aroused a warm applause from the audience.
Hei Xiaojun, professor of the School of Electronic Information and Communication delivered a speech as well by combining his experiences in teaching international students and the bittersweet feelings in research process, and he wished all the students could achieve fruitful results in study while enjoying it. The last part witnessed the speeches respectively from the senior and new student representatives. “I was a new student and fortunately, I chose HUST where the environment is nice and people are friendly. I’ve harvested a lot both in the knowledge of my study and the understanding of China. ” Rezvani Seyedali from Iran impressed many new students with his heartfelt words, igniting their hope towards the promising future. Pasan Tharindu Thilakasiri Modarage from Sri Lanka also conveyed the voice from the new students in his speech that confirmed the important role which difficulties play in our life that was full of twist and turns. He said: “We will cherish the hard-won opportunity to study and live in HUST and confront the ordeals as well as discover the beauty of China.”
Chen Lin also presented a vivid and sincere speech at the ceremony, where she introduced briefly the functions of China Scholarship Council and that Chinese government had always paid intensive attention to the mutual communication and exchanges with the outside world, especially in the field of high education: “In 2015 CSC sponsored 40,600 students from 183 countries to study in China with the newly-sponsored internationals students as many as 13,000.” She wished that all the new students who came from afar could cherish the chance to study in HUST by scholarship and devote themselves in the national construction as well as expose themselves in practical activities to make Chinese friends and understand China better. In closing, the ceremony ended up in the words from Zhao Xiaofeng: “You take pride in HUST today and HUST will take pride in you in the future!” A big applause from the seats thundered the hall that was livened up by the expectation and excitement from the new students.
It’s said that there are 3300 international students studying in HUST with the new students amounting to 888, covering 418 scholarship students. Presented at the ceremony was An Rui, the deputy dean of Tongji Medical College, Yu Hailin, the director of International Exchange Centre and dean of School of International Education and other leaders and professors of the schools and department. The international students have added the exotic air to the campus and marked the improvement of international education in our university.

国际教育学院副院长赵晓峰主持了本届开学典礼。身着本国传统服装的十余名老生早早地候在报告厅门口，欢迎来自全球各地、肤色各异的新生入场。新生们也都身着正装，为开学典礼增添了一份神圣和肃穆。多国的语言，多样的肤色，别样的服装让报告厅宛如联合国会场，但此时的他们却有一个共同的身份——华中科技大学国际学生新生。陈建国副校长发表了热情洋溢的致辞，表达了对来自各国新同学的欢迎，并介绍了华科的教育资源和国际化办学的目标。“希望同学们能与中国师生相互学习，广交朋友，凝聚友谊。成为连结中外友好的使者，为增进中国和世界各国友谊尽一份力量。”他最后的祝福引起了在场学生的热烈掌声。电子信息与通信学院的黑晓军教授作为老师代表也发表了致辞，他不仅介绍了学校浓厚的学术氛围，还结合自己带国际学生的经验指出了做学问的乐趣与困难，并祝愿所有国际学生能学有所成，乐在其中。最后是新老生代表致辞，“曾经我也是一名新生，我很庆幸自己选择了HUST，这里环境很好，老师和同学们也很友好。我收获了很多，不仅是知识，还有对中国的了解。”来自伊朗的老生代表瑞瓦尼的一番深情演讲打动了很多新生，让他们对未来的学习和生活充满了希望。来自伊朗的新生代表帕森也妙语连珠，指出了困难对于人生的重要意义，并传达了所有新生的声音——“我们会好好珍惜来华科学习和生活的机会，直面可能的困难和挑战，发现中国的美丽。"
陈琳主任在开学典礼上也发表了生动而恳切的致辞。她简单介绍了国际基金委员会的职能，并指出中国政府高度重视和支持中外学生学者的交流互鉴：“2015年，国家留学基金共资助183个国家的40,600名学生来华留学，仅当年新资助的外国留学生就达13,000多人。”对于远道而来求学的国际学生新生，陈琳希望他们能珍惜在HUST学习的机会和奖学金的荣誉，希望他们能致力于国家建设，多和中国师生交流，并通过实践活动更好地了解中国。最后开学典礼在赵晓峰副院长的一句“今天你以华科为荣，明天华科以你为荣！”中结束，赢得了在场的国际学生热烈掌声，整个会场洋溢着新同学们的兴奋与希冀。
据悉，我校现有来自全球各国的3300名国际学生在校学习，今年秋季入学新生789人，其中奖学金生418人。同时出席开学典礼的还有同济医学院副院长安锐，国际交流处常务副处长和国际教育学院常务副院长余海林，以及经济学院，管理学院，公共管理学院，电子信息与通讯学院等十余名院系领导及教授。国际学生新生的到来为校园增添了国际化的氛围，同时也见证了我校国际化办学水平的不断提高。
