On October 11 (Beijing time), history was made at the 20th China Open!
Zheng Qinwen, the student at the School of Physical Education of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), swept the women's singles final in straight sets (2-0) to claim the title.
It is Zheng's first career WTA 1000 title, and a historic one:
she is the first Chinese player ever to win the China Open Women's Singles Champion, and the second Chinese woman after Li Na, the alumna of HUST's School of Journalism and Information Communication, to win a WTA 1000 singles title.
Congratulations from HUST
HUST sent an official congratulatory letter to Zheng Qinwen at the first opportunity, praising her composure and perseverance:
"...You have brought glory to your country and honor to your university. Your performance embodies the spirit of Chinese athletes who fear no challenge, and reflects HUST's ethos of 'aiming high while staying grounded, and striving for excellence'.
We hope you will build on this success, and contribute HUST's strength to the building of a sporting powerhouse."
From injury setbacks to the top of the podium —
Zheng Qinwen, HUST is proud of you!
