This summer, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) welcomed four students from the University of Oxford for research internships. While Oxford students have joined HUST's research internship program on previous occasions over the years, this is the first time participants have come through China Link, a short-term research exchange program under the Chinese Government Scholarship.

Research at the Frontier

The internships were hosted by three units: the School of Mechanical Science and Engineering (MSE), Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center (WHMFC), and the College of Public Administration (CPA). During placements ranging from one to three months, the students joined research groups led by HUST faculty and worked alongside Chinese peers on cutting-edge topics, including capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducers (CMUTs), non-invasive ultrasound brain-computer interfaces, perovskite solar cells, topological computing, and information governance.

The projects spanned HUST's signature strengths in interdisciplinary research. Professor MA Bo's group in MSE focused on integrated ultrasound diagnosis-and-treatment technology and on-chip micro/nano sensing chips. The Center for Micro/Nano Materials Design and Manufacturing, where Associate Researcher YANG Fan is based, works on atomic-scale manufacturing and optoelectronic devices. Professor XU Gang's group at WHMFC explored topological materials and first-principles calculations, and Professor SHE Shuo's group in CPA applied big-data approaches to public safety and emergency management.

Industry and Cultural Experiences

Beyond their research, the students joined a series of industry visits and cultural activities. They visited Dongfeng Motor, attended its 10th Science and Technology Innovation Week, and toured the Voyah smart factory, where they saw first-hand the latest developments in new energy vehicles, intelligent connected vehicles and smart manufacturing. The visits offered a window into how China's automotive industry is moving from traditional manufacturing toward intelligent manufacturing. A hands-on Chinese paper-cutting workshop added a cultural dimension, giving the students an introduction to traditional Chinese arts through practice.

On the final day of the program, the students delivered presentations on their research outcomes, followed by a discussion with faculty on academic life at HUST and China–UK youth exchange. Professor CHEN Rong, Dean of the School of International Education, presented certificates of completion to the students.

According to the participants, the internship offered first-hand insight into HUST's research environment and academic culture, as well as into the city of Wuhan. HUST will continue to expand its international cooperation channels and welcome more outstanding students from world-leading universities, building broader platforms for academic and cultural exchange among young people from China and abroad.
